A hyperscaler is one of the handful of companies that operate cloud and computing infrastructure at the largest scale — Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Meta foremost among them. They design, own, and run their hyperscale data center campuses directly, as opposed to renting capacity in a multi-tenant colocation facility.
The hyperscaler is the actor at the center of the siting story, and usually the hardest to see. Behind a code-named LLC and a non-disclosure agreement, the same few operators are driving the land options, the power demand that fills the interconnection queue or forces behind-the-meter generation, and the water draw a community is asked to accommodate.
